ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Ontario County Sheriff Cirencione, speaking in Albany last week, voiced his support of the PROTECT Act, saying, “Over and over and over again, our police officers run into the same people who are struggling.”

The PROTECT Act takes dangerous criminals and repeat offenders off the street.

The acronym PROTECT stands for PRETRIAL RISK OVERVIEW FOR THREAT EVALUATION CUSTODY TREATMENT.

Enables judges to intervene in defendants' lives to get them (and their families) needed services.

Allows judges to hold defendants until they are no longer a threat to communities.

Enhances judges' ability to assess a defendant's need for mental health assistance and divert them if appropriate.
