Federal agents conducted a series of sweeps in Chicago this fall, leading to an overnight drop in attendance at majority-Latino schools as parents kept their children at home to avoid potential separation at drop-off. In response, families and educators organized various initiatives to ensure students got to school safely. In Little Village, organizers launched “magic school buses,” while in Albany Park, walking school buses were formed.

Teachers also played a role by checking in on students, distributing whistles, and offering support for learning from home. Sylvelia Pittman, a Chicago Public Schools educator and member of the Chicago Teachers Union E-team, stated, "I believe they keep coming because we show them love."

ICE remains active in Chicago. Despite federal actions, educators continue their efforts and sanctuary teams are still in operation. Parents have also maintained group walks to school to keep children safe, as school communities work to protect students and maintain learning environments amid ongoing challenges.
