On Thursday, students in Patrick Young and Thomas Rende's American Experience class at Albany High School in Albany, New York, participated in an immersive gallery walk activity focused on the lives of Union soldiers during the Civil War. The activity featured five stations that covered topics such as army food, weapons and equipment, games, battlefield medicine, and diseases. Students used their senses during the station activities and answered questions related to each topic.

At one station, a shiny metal box with a candleholder inside was highlighted. The device, which served as a nightlight for soldiers, captured the attention of the students.

American Experience is an interdisciplinary course that allows students to explore United States history and literature through cooperative discovery. Evidence of student engagement during the lesson was also shared online with the addition of 19 new photos.
