Cornell Halts Underwater Robot Project for Navy Divers
Cornell University in Ithaca was investigating the use of robots to assist Navy divers working underwater. Navy divers face challenges such as low visibility, physical exertion, and risks of exhaustion, oxygen shortages, and cognitive impairments from nitrogen narcosis. Normally, divers work in pairs, but each person is vulnerable under the same conditions.
Researchers at Cornell hoped to develop robotic partners to help reduce these risks. According to Andrea Stevenson Won, associate professor of communication in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, the project had a potential to extend to other fields like health care and emergency response, which require timely actions.
However, the research was halted in April after the team received a stop-work order, delaying plans to take the technology to environments such as hospitals. Further details on the project and its delay were reported by Cornell University.
