Robert Fulton's Clermont: A Pioneering Steamboat Journey
Staff Report / Albanylocal.org
On this day in 1807, Robert Fulton's steamboat, known as the Clermont, embarked on its first journey up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany. The steamboat was drawn by Richard Varick DeWitt from memory fifty years after he first saw it. The drawing showcases three parts of the ship: the pioneer vessel, a modified and enlarged version, and the mechanics. Contemporary accounts depict the steamboat as a fire-sparking, smoke-belching monster that some likened to a floating sawmill. By 1814, the steamboat was deemed old-fashioned and subsequently retired. The watercolor drawing titled "Clermont: Three Part Study of a Ship" by Richard Varick DeWitt from 1858 is a historical depiction of this significant event marking the introduction of steamboats on the Hudson River.
